Horse muck and strawberries
« on: August 27, 2010, 15:24 »
Now they've finished and I've cut them all back, is it the right thing to do to now cover them with horse manure   ??? Will it be good for them?
The goal of life is not to arrive at the graveyard in a well preserved body, but instead to skid in sideways, totally worn out yelling "What a ride!".

Only if it is really well rotted. What you don't want is a boost of nitrogen at this time of year or they will be prone to go "soft" and susceptible to disease. If it isn't well rotted, use BFB.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Oh thanx very much....I did wonder if I was about to do the right thing.
I have had the horse manure for about a month, sat there waiting to be used....

All new to me this, when I was a kid the thought of horse poop on veggies made me puke!  ::) now I want the best for my veg beds.

The only item I cover with horse manure is the asparagus bed, nothing else.  In fact, I don't ever use manure - it could be prone to disease.  I use bfb and other fertilisers.  I dig over the soil ready for winter, and then spread bfb, chicken pellets, etc, and then let the winter weather soak it down into the ground.  Simple:)
