this was my best year for garlic , probably due to cold weather , garlic likes a longish period below 5 degrees in jan or feb ,and we had that in the royal county this year alright so i have loads of the stuff !!!
i plant in october , solant white ,sic, from wallis seeds my favourite seeds merchant  very good value.
My tip is keep the garlic from being in a waterlogged state and feed as already suggested with a high potash feed or comfrey in the spring

Potash - does this mean I can use wood fire ashes?  I've never done this before with garlic.

I do put ashes around my gooseberries in the winter and have fabulous cropping, but they are dormant when I do it, unlike garlic would be.

Thanks, Pip

my neighbour grows 2000+ onions each year (before you ask -I think he sells them). He swears by putting the ash from his wood burning stove onto them - it certainly seems to work as he gets great results.

Cor, thanks Bigben.  I'm trying not to use chemical fertilisers and have 2 tin buckets of ash (= free :))...so I'll give it a go today.
I'm growing rocombole (hard top garlic that does that fantastic loop-the-loop thing with its "flower" stalk) and a pink skinned soft top garlic.  Used to grow elephant garlic but too wussy for my taste and if I didnt track down all those little hard bulbs I found I was getting it everywhere.

regards, Pip

Wood Ask contains a much higher proportion of Lime than Potash, so beware that it will raise the PH of your soil too (i.e. make it more Alkaline).  Not necessarily a problem ... but it might be after a few years!
