Pruning Plum trees
« on: August 06, 2010, 16:34 »
I have just read that I should have pruned my Plum tree (two years old from a whip) in June and it is now beginning of August.

Should I prune now or have I missed the boat for this year?

The idea is not to prune in the Autumn/Winter when it is cold and damp as there is a greater chance of the tree contracting the silver leaf fungus.

Really that means late Sept/Oct through to say April.

Would say we are OK at this time as it is still warm and hopefully generally dry(ish). You should be OK for a while.

I'm hoping there's still a while in which to get pruning. I have a large nectarine to tackle and a plum.

Just don't leave it until the autumn chill sets in and growth slows down.
