broody bantam
« on: August 05, 2010, 15:57 »
Hello there,
I am new to keeping bantams and have a broody Silky sitting on seven eggs.  I am hoping to solve a mystery so I would be grateful to anyone out there who can throw light on this.

My Silky (Elanor) was originally sitting on ten eggs but I took two away as she seemed  to have trouble coping with them all.  She was then sitting on eight eggs.  Two days later I checked and she was sitting on seven eggs.  There was no egg shell, no sticky patch either in the bedding or on her and I checked through the bedding to see if it had rolled underneath.  There was no evidence of digging outside or any predator getting in and she has been happily brooding for several days now without losing any more (long may it last!).

I wonder if anyone can account for the missing egg.  Chicks are due to hatch mid August (a little over a week) and I can't wait.
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat

I had the same with one of my guinea fowl eggs - it just dissapeared as well. I can only assume that it had cracked and mum ate it to remove any evidence.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyfull,
I tried to attach a picture of Elanor but the file was too large for the system.  Anyhow if any chicks emerge I'll try again.
cheers!

Thank you Lola,
I can't wait!  My black banty brooded a clutch last year and it seemed to take forever before the chicks finally hatched.  We had 4 cockerels and 1 hen that time.  I am hoping for more hens this time.  That was my first clutch.  This will be my second
