Help
« on: August 05, 2010, 15:34 »
Hi there, sure someone on here will know what is wrong !

It started yesterday when i came home from work, i went out to my hens as normal to check on them and collect eggs when one of my hen's was sat on the nest so i left her alone. I went back an hour or so later and the same hen was still sat on the nest, i went to stroke her(which she normally likes) and she was a bit grumpy with me and seemed a bit upset, she was like this all evening and when i got up this morning i went to check again, but this time she was 'up n about' and was drinking and eating so i thought whatever it was she must be o.k. now, that was until i just got home again and she is the same again, sat on the nest and very very grumpy, been there at least an hour now so gettin a little worried. any help much appreciated :)

Hi timmy, it sounds as if your hen is going broody :)  just keep moving her out of the nest box, and she will probably snap out of it in a few days.

Don't be worried, there is nothing medically wrong with her :)

Here is my list of differrent methods of how to break a broody (or not  ::))

here is my list on ways to break a broody

You cant stop them going broody but there are several ways to deal with it.
1) let them have fertile eggs,
2) keep removing the eggs so she is sitting on nothing - can take weeks,
3) keep removing her from the nest box - again can take weeks,
4) put her in a cage with food and water - can take between 1 and 7 days,
5) dunk her bum in a bucket of cold water - this lowers her body temperature - not tried this method but she may need several dunkings (just make sure she dries off though).
So far I have tried methods 1 and 4 - much prefer method 1 though

Hopefully one will work for you  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.
