Cider apples?
« on: August 02, 2010, 13:24 »
I have a large tree full to bursting with cider apples (I think they are cider apples anyway!)

Any ideas on what to do with them (apart from cider lol?  I can't afford a fruit press)

The last two years I've just binned them all when they fall, and it seems such a waste, but they realy are too sour to eat.

Cider apples usually comprises a mix of apples so that you get a nicer flavour. If you're talking hard cider, then you'd need someone more experienced than I.
As for pressing, I'm sure you have a neighbour who'd be willing to do it for you for a small share of the yield, and they would also be more knowledgeable about the local apples as to its merits for cider.

You could always use some in your jams, sour apples would help the set :)
Make a jelly as you would with crab apples.....mint and apple jelly? etc etc

All herbs are good in jelly, especially rosemary to go with lamb. Yum. With the blackberry season upon us, bramble jelly is good. If they cook well you can add apple to any fruit for pies and crumbles, then there's apple sauce....sorry to those purists who don't like to put sugar in, but these may need it. I'm sure you can freeze apples ready to use over winter,
