Sour crop....help!
« on: July 01, 2007, 14:51 »
Pretty sure that Clary has sour crop (on top of laying soft eggs). :(

She was not herself this morning and her crop was (and still is) squishy.

Read Aunt Sally's sticky and my Katie Threar book. Went with Katie's advice (only cos I wasn't confident at making Clary bring up crop contents in case it went back down the wrong way).

So have given epsom salts, followed by crushed layers pellets in bio yoghurt.

My questions are.......do I still give corn later? can I let her out of enclosed run ?

Was due to give cod liver oil in a bit of cooked rice to help with the shell problem. Can I still do this?

I can only cope with one problem at a time

Just to update..............

Clary perked up the day after and even gave us a double yolker a couple of days later 8)

However, she's been off colour again today with same symptoms. Dosed with epsom salts and was a bit perkier soon after.

Have continued to give a bit of  live yoghurt daily but am wondering if she's just going to be prone to this problem. Our other hen is fine.

very squishy as described in your sticky but not sure if her breath smells as have a blocked nose myself :!:

her crop still has a sponginess to it this morning but not as bad as yesterday so will continue her on crushed layers pellets in yoghurt and keep her in run today.

If this continues she will need an antifungal from the vets.  Or you run the risk of her dying  :(

The hen survived and casting my mind back (not that easy!) she was back to her normal self within a couple of days.

You can get epsom salts from boots pretty cheaply. can't remember the dose though but i did dilute in water and administered with a teaspoon (you'll need help)

If you're worried then I would recommend a visit to the vets. I pay about £10 for a consultation which is worth it to put your mind at rest.

Good luck
