storing early potatoes
« on: June 30, 2007, 10:58 »
Hello All.. i have just lifted my early potatoes (Pentland Javelin and Arran pilot) and have obtained about two large bucketfulls. Question is, can i store them in my large cold frame for a while, until i acquire a sack or similar, or should I wash them all and take them inside? At the minute, they are in two buckets still with a bit of earth on them...I am worried that the damp might get to them, although it is dry in the frame.. Regards DB :?
trying to be organic....

Leave the soil on.  Indeed, get a 3rd bucket and divide them so that you can put 2 or 3" of soil on top of each bucket.  Keep them in a dark place.

OK, will do. Will they be allright even though the soil is damp?....will I just cover them and move them into the shed or will the frame be OK?...

Store them cool, in the dark and in the dry. Cool means 10-15C, if they're kept in the fridge they will go sweet.

The way I've seen them stored is in a heavy, black plastic sack that had a fair bit of dry (as in never been wetted) peat in it, and the potatoes had been allowed to dry off their surface before storing in said bag. The bag was kept in the pantry, which was always cool. It was never tightly closed. Would keep for months.
