Tree roots
« on: July 22, 2010, 11:13 »
A friend of mine has a tree root sticking up in her lawn, and she is forever tripping over it.  Am I correct in saying that she waits until winter, then levels off the root with a saw or whatever, and then turfs over it?  She was thinking about highering the lawn (she hasn't a very big lawn apparently), and I said it might be easier just to level the root and then turfing over it.  What do you think?

When I moved here I had tree root 'lumps' in the lawn  about 9ft away form the tree trunk.

I dug round the root and cut through it about 8ins or so below the surface either side of the bump, backfilled and re-seeded. It worked a treat, I don't think it's agood idea to do it too near to the tree though.

If it's a large main piece of root, I wouldn't cut it, just build up soil around it. If it's a thinner offshoot, then you could get away with trimming it, but before covering it over, let the wound harden off to avoid easy entry by pests or viruses.

We used a product called root-out but for a quick solution it means hard labour I'm afraid....pick axe and a saw at the ready, lololol
