The one and only
« on: July 20, 2010, 16:20 »
A dear member of this forum gave me some blue poppy seeds earlier this year. I planted about half of them and I got a pretty good germination rate.

Young plants were duly planted out and grew and grew and grew, big tall and strong............ then the slugs started to come back. Very late this year, probably due to the cold winter?

So I was left with one plant which had three flower buds :). Bud number one got eaten before it could open :(, bud number two opened and the petals got blown off before I could get out into the garden to take a picture :( and I took this of bud number three having opened, before it had the same fate.

What a beautiful flower, if only the weather had given it a chance.

the flowers are pretty and fleeting but the blue pods are striking in the border IMO.
Hopefully the one pod will produce enough seed for some to grow again next year, unless you use them when you are bread making

I'm growing lots of poppies. How do you get the seeds?

The seeds are inside the pod, when they are ready keep your eye out because the pod becomes a seed shaker, with holes for the seeds to fall out of like a pepper pot :)
