saving potatoes for next years seed
« on: June 28, 2007, 10:37 »
this years earlies were grown from potatoes left from last years crop, they have performed very well, with less evidence of disease than the original seed potato crop. how many years is it reasonable to save seed for, will it loose vigour as the plants pick up virus?

i didnt save my maincrop potatoes for seed, as last year i had v bad late blight.

I suppose there could be two arguments here, new seed spuds are certified disease free so you know you aint gonna have problems. The other argument could be that by planting last years crop you may evolve the spuds resistance to local problems, me i buy fresh stock as I like to change the varieties each year.
