blue tinge to comb
« on: July 16, 2010, 08:54 »
Hiya,
Let my hens out this morning and while checking them over noticed that Nugget, my very broody hen, has a blue tinge to the edge of her comb. She is otherwise well - exhibiting typical broody behaviour.
Any ideas??

I always thought it was a sign of poor circulation? I have a Rhode Rock with a grey tinge to the edges of her comb and keep expecting her to drop dead, but she's as lively as ever just now!

This is the answer I had by Joyful when one of mine had a blue/black tinge to her comb.

a darker colour comb (possibly going tinged with blue) can also be a sign of a lack of vit B (I think). Try a little tiny bit of marmite on toast or get some vitamin and mieral drops to go in her water (you can get small bottles with b vits added from bird pet supplies).

It worked because she's looking good now. They all loved the marmite!

My cockerel developed a blue tinge to his comb some months back. I rang the vet and they said it could be a sign of heart problems, which cockerels tend to get during the mating season as they get over excited. Since he was eating and drinking as normal, I was advised not to stress him too much and to put some tonic into his water.
He is fine now with no blue tint at all to his comb. It may be that your hen is simply a little stressed and needs to be put somewhere quiet to get her strength back.

Thanks for your replies- as she has become less broody the tinge has disappeared- mind you she's having the dog cage treatment at present so is not very active, I shall keep a close eye on her when she's out and about again ( hopefully tomorow)
