Nepeta/Catmint
« on: July 09, 2010, 22:22 »
I planted 6 nepetas earlier in the spring and they've been wonderful (can't believe how much of a bee magnet they are!), anyhow, they're starting to go over now, and I've read that cutting them back hard may produce a second flush, question is, how hard is hard? I'm a bit of a demon with the secateurs, and with this heat I don't want to kill themso, what do you think? Thanks as ever, Jude.

about 4 inches left should be ok, but do give them a good soak as well :)

hi - my cats love the mint and i haven't the heart to trim it back. It is such a joy watching the cats lazing the sunny afternoons away snoozing in the middle of the mint. I love the bees that buzz araound too

If you let them go to seed and drop, you'll regret your hesitation. Had that happen and the following year I was swamped in nepeta so I had to rip it all out or lose all my flowering plants.

haven't got the problem of keeping an eye out for plants that take over. the nepeta is grown in a container and if any seeds do drop then they land on a barren and in hospitipal concrete yard! oh what i would do for even a small garden! lol
