I don't know about edging the plot with them. I dig up the chives every two years, keep one clump and throw the rest in the brown bin. I then split up the remaining clump and plant out. The speed they grow is alarming   As the stems get too tough to eat, I cut back to ground level to encourage new shoots.

I plant my carrots behind them and hope the smell when I cut them most days will keep the dreaded carrot fly at bay. :)

WOW..............what a lovely response, thanks everyone for the advice.
I'm sorry it took so long to get back to reply to answers but have been trying to keep off the old pooter for a while as so much to do in the garden (especially if you don't know your chives from your chard  :D) like me.

I am so please to hear I can leep them going and love the idea of having them all around the garden. I do have a dedicated fruit and veg area but the rest of the garden I like to keep fairly unrestricted. Not all neat little rows of flowers. My hubby does like his herbaceous borders but never complains when the 'odd' little bit of veg appears and the flowers on chives are lovely enough to go anywhere.

Right - I'm off to split up the pot and let them stretch their legs  :)

Thanks again one and all........I do so LOVE this site
