Cucumber going yellow
« on: June 28, 2010, 23:07 »
My little cucumber in the greenhouse is nearly 2 foot tall now and has started producing little cucumbers.

They are curling up and turning yellow though  :(

Is it just shedding little cukes cos it needs to put more effort into growing taller or is it not happy and having a tantrum  ???

Any ideas?

No one else had this with a cucumber then? :(

Maybe, looking at some of the other cuke threads, I'm lucky to have got my little cuke plant to grow big enough for it to try and produce a fruit  ??? ;) It seems to be a bad year for cukes all round  :tongue2:

Can I feed it with some tomato food to help it along?

You have probably noticed by now that I'm not the most expert cucumber grower round here but I would think that by now even the most tantrum-prone plants should be starting to settle down.

It might just need a bit of a feed if the compost has run out of nutrients, but I'm also wondering if it has been overwatered (they don't like that either!)

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I've had 2 lovely cues off the one in the greenhouse, but that's all :(

All the other babies cues are turning yellow the same as yours.........it is getting watered and fed the same as the toms, and looks healthy enough.
It can't be overwatered, cos it's in a bottomless pot in the border so drains freely.

All this basically means.......... I don't know either, sorry  :(

From reading the above, is it the fruitlets curling up and turning yellow, or the plant itself?  If it is the fruit, then it sounds like it might be the flowers were perhaps not successfully pollinated?

Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.

Cucumbers intended for the greenhouse do not want pollinating, in fact should there be any male flowers, they should be removed.

Are they just too hot?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

could be a combination of things maybe compost/soil too dry  and maybe not enough food ,give them a good drink of comfrey juice, manure ,nettle juice diluted of course

The plants themselves are healthy - it's just the fruits that are curling up.

If I remember tomorrow I'll take the camera to the plot with and have a closer inspection.

I'll also give them a good feed with some tomato food but I'll let you all know how they're doing... I'm hoping it's just aborting whilst putting some effort into growing  :)
