What breed is this - any ideas?
« on: June 22, 2010, 16:15 »
Here is a pic of the 10 hatched so far (2 still trying ::))

So we have, allegedly,:

5 choc partridge wyandotte (Daddy cream, Mommy chocolate carrying cream)
3 silver pencilled wyandotte (Daddy Cream)
1 lavender araucana
and
1 ????

The lavender you can see at the top and the little black chick bottom left was SUPPOSED to be a pure silver pencilled wyandotte - but .........

BTW, the 8 wyandottes have the same Daddy and he does throw self-coloured sometimes.

What fun this is.

I'm guessing our little cuckoo in the nest may be a black silkie?

You mean bottom left?

Definitely not wyandotte!  Look at it's feathery legs!  Does it have a single or rosecomb?

If single, it could be a Marans, but I would need a close up (please!) to have abetter guess ;)

Oops yes bottom left.

I don't think she has any Marans but I could be wrong.

I originally asked her for Araucana and Silkies but one of her hatches failed and she wanted the silkies for herself - gave me legbars instead.  She got a bit muddled though and I was wondering if it could be a black Silkie?

I will get some more pics soon.  I'm pretty cr*p with the camera - it's a good one too so only me to blame.  ;)

Does he have five (or more!) toes?  If yes, then a silkie *nods*

Hmm... well 5 toes are a characteristic of the breed... maybe not a pure silkie then!

Well whatever it is, its a proper little cutie.

Question please, and you're all going to think Im thick. How many days to incubate an egg? Mine have been under a broody for 17 days now, I moved her to the maternity unit today, but I dont know how many days she may have left.

Many thanks.

Nope definitely not a pure silkie (which have black flesh, and therefore black feet and a grey/black beak too)

Maybe a Heinz57 until the feathers come through!

Eggs normally hatch around day 21, where day 0 is the first day the eggs are under the broody.  So you probably have 4 days to go, though with a broody it may take anything from 19 to 25 days, depending on what kind of eggs she is sitting on.
