Onion Crazy!
« on: June 20, 2010, 08:16 »
I am on the verge of a breakdown,my onions are driving me insane. For two seasons now I have had disastrous results with thick necks and hardly any swelling at the bulbous end of my onions. What am I doing wrong? Please help
I wouldn't say I was the best manager for the job,but I would say I'm in the top one! (Brian Clough)

Are you growing from seed or set?  What sort of soil do you have and how often are you watering them?  Are there any visible signs of disease on the leaves or bulbs?

First tell us what you are doing, then we can assess whether it is anything that you are doing wrong....

Okay,I am growing from onion sets called Turbo. I planted in late March in a prepared bed  which was topped up with growmore a week before the sets were planted. No manure within five yards of the onion bed,but I must admit to watering a lot as it has been very dry here at times. Could it be that I am planting the sets to deeply? I pushed them in so that only the very tip was showing. I must also admit to not firming the ground before planting the sets.

May be an oversimplification but don't you harvest onions in August-September?
June seems too early as the different types bulk up depending on the day length. If you have long day onions they will need more time.

Have no idea what of the varieties Turbo are, so a search may be required.

Yup, these won't be ready until the Autumn.

At the risk of hijacking...

I lifted my over-wintered onions today; some are massive, some average. As a first-time grower, I pulled them because they look plenty big enough for me, though the leaves haven't yet yellowed.

this seemed logical to me, but should I have waited?

Too late now, they're all drying in the sun!  ::)
