Slow to grow in new raised beds
« on: June 18, 2010, 22:59 »
Can anyone assure me!

this year I decided to put in some raised beds and I bought some bags of soil - All bought through Harrod Horticulture, so they were good quality.

the problem is that i sowed carrots and beetroot a while back and they seem to be so slow to grow. I'm worried that either i need to add sometthing to the soil or it's been so cold when they went in that I may as well start again.

is anyone else having problems - The peas in the same place are OK and i have had some for dinner already!

thanks

Beetroot can be slow so this depends upon when you put the seed in.

Carrot - I would re-sow.

You can germinate beetroot quite easily in paper pots or small individual cells ready to plant out once they have made a bit of growth.

Works for me  ;)

Thanks very much!
I don't feel so defeated now and will try again.

Are you sure that there not just getting eaten by slugs? Might be worth sprinking a few slug pellets around and see if that makes any differance. Best of luck :)

I'm pretty certain that I have no slug problem at the moment - It's quite dry and chalky on the ground and I have two resident frogs that sneak about at night.
The beetroot is just hanging there at about 3inches high and don't seem interested in getting any bigger.
my Mum just seems to bung things in (in Surrey - I'm in Wilts) and they look great.

I am going to soak some seeds tonight and try again. I am just worried the soil needs chicken pooh already, but it should be good stuff.

Everything just seems so slow including my outdoor cucumbers (Yes My Ma's look huge but they are greenhouse ones) Dang - very frustrating.

Last year my beetroot were huge and with successional sowing it just kept coming. I gave loads away. This year I've had some in since March and its not even as big as my radish.

Its just one of those years. Sweetcorn everywhere looks good so if you like that get some in quick and have another bash at beetroot next year.
