First Earlies no flowers yet?
« on: June 17, 2010, 22:37 »

Anyone else got no flowers yet on first early spuds?

My Rocket, Orla and Swift have still not flowered despite having been in just over 12 weeks, whereas the second earlies and some maincrops I put in later (alongside) are now flowering...

What gives? Patience? Just the cold start they had? No flowers = no spuds, right?

Hmmm....

Phill  :(

I have swift in and it said that they do not flower.  I have been havesting beautiful small 1st earlies and have not seen a flower.  I planted my swift on 19th March.  I am only harvesting as we need them. 25 plnts to go.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

Me too. I planted five varieties of new spuds in containers and I haven't seen a single flower on any of them. But when I started pulling up the Rocket and Pentland Javelin I had loads of spuds, some of them getting quite big.

Nothing to worry about. As others have said and we've often said on here, some spuds don't flower. Full stop!!

There's a comprehensive database here www.europotato.org although they're having technical issues at the moment, but if you ignore that and search for instance on Rocket, it'll tell you that flowers are rare.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I assume they're in the ground - I wouldn't worry about watering.

I am in Cheshire too (well just over the border!) and I harvested my Swifts over May Bank Holiday, having planted them on 27th March. They hadn't flowered either and I had asked the same question to be told that they don't flower! I only had three plants in a container so furtled around on two separate occasions and then finally lifted them. There were still a few little spuds forming, so after taking all the larger potatoes, I replanted them and two weeks later I got a few more. They are now out of the container and my newly seeded Pak Choi is coming up in their place.

Get furtling!

Do pentland Javalin flower does anybody know?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

My first earlies (pentland javelin) haven't flowered, in fact they are tiny.  My old plot neighbour says this is the worst year for them he has ever seen.

I'm new to first earlies but my second earlies (maris peer) have been flowering for about 2 weeks, my main crop (maris piper) are full of buds just about to flower.
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

My PJs flowered and I started digging at 14 weeks  this year, instead of the usual 10/12 :(
But at least they did get there  ::)
