Star buy

Sorry but I'm feeling a tad chuffed with myself  :D

Saw an ad in our local weekly rag for an Allen Scythe for £50.......bargain!

Done the ringing up and such, then issued directions for the duvet sharer to go forth into the wilds of Cornwall with our trusty, if not a little rusty, Pug pick up to collect.

On collection the vendor had decided to knock £10 off "as I sounded quite nice"

All it needs is the cowling put back on, a little spit and polish and a splash of red oxide and some paint in Allen livery and we're done.

I'm absolutely cock a  hoop, wooohooooo!

So it's a motorised scythe? Sorry to be a bit thick - but I've never seen one before

Indeed John, like a one person finger bar mower but it stays on the flat, bit of a beastie apparently but worth their salt. She seems to have good compression once we wetted up the piston with oil and turned her by hand........ now to get a few things sorted on her.

They are indeed beasties,  i`ve seen them used on various fisheries for bank clearance and you need to stay behind the cutter bar as they have a very nasty bite. :D

A snip at £40. :)

Sounds like a useful machine. Good luck on the restoration.

When you start using it ,especially in confined spaces,be sure to disengage the drive well  before you get to where you want to stop. They have a dog clutch which slams them in and out of gear and are some times very  reluctant to come out  if the wheels are driving hard.I was laying a hedge last winter and came across on old allen scythe burried in there that must have got stuck many years ago.

As the duvet sharer is built like a racing pencil (and no room for the go-faster stripe) I'm gonna bungee cord him to the hedge behind him so he'll get a return trip, lololol

We got her because we're bedevilled by marsh grass in my big four acre, and coz of how it grows its holding water under it keeping everything marshy, so the theory is to open it up and dry it out, we have proved this on a test patch, soooo enter Mr Allen Scythe then we can nibble away at it and not rely on farmer buddies.
