Keeping chickens entertained in their run
« on: June 08, 2010, 13:35 »
Howdy!

We've had our girls for about 2 months now. We keep them in their run whilst we're at work and then they get the run of the garden when we're home. (Bye bye to my carrots...)

I've been thinking of ways to keep them entertained in their run and so far have put in a perch, a peckablock and a dustbath - inside a covered pet carrier!

Anyone got any other suggestions? I hang some leafts/herbs from strings sometimes, but it doesnt last very long. Tried hanging a whole lettuce today, will see if they liked that when i get home.

Be good to hear your ideas and what you do for your chooks

I have built a bit of an assualt course now for mine and a juicy bok choi hangs ready for those clever enough to get there, only so far Daisey is the only one so she is stuffing her face and yesterday was teasing the others by holding a large piece in her beak and lowering her head so when the others went to grab it she popped her head back up and gobbled it.
I think I will need to make it easier and progress to a harder on later.
Other than that, my lot are propper lazy and lie around all day dust bathing.

Haha fantastic!

If you or anyone has any pictures of your runs and the fun things you put in there I'd like to see them!

What about a swing and a mirror ok they are not budgies but hey you never know  :D

Would love to see the photo, I have put a dust bath in a large covered litter tray for my girls and they love that too :) :)

We did hang a CD up which they pecked at a bit, but mirrors sound like a fun idea.

I've just thought that putting a couple of logs in there - good for climbing and bugs i bet! Think I'll be needing a bigger run...  :tongue2:

Have got some thick offcut branches in mine about 6" off the floor and a good covering of some stripped off bark from a local timber place that had been steamed off - no nasty chemicals. Because all of this had been left in a huge heap for weeks it was full of bugs, my little girls firtle around in it for ages
