Spuds
« on: June 08, 2010, 12:34 »
Hi

Has anyone up north lifted their first early spuds yet? The three rows of rocket i planted in March got knocked back by the late frost last month and wondered if anyone else was in the same boat?

someone on our plot harvested their first Lady Crystl on Saturday but these had been grown under protection on a raised bed. They looked a good size  :)  No flowers on any of mine yet but the bloke on the next plot has flowers on his Charlottes

I am harvesting my earlys out of the grow bags in the garden. I just stick my hand in and have a little furtle around untill i find something that fits my palm then i pull them out and there in the pan before they know what hit them :D. the ones on the allotment are another story, i had a little look today and i reckon another month untill they are ready, think i will stick to grow bags next year.

My charlottes were planted in bags about the third week of March and were in the greenhous until early May. They're outside now and have mostly all flowered. The stems have grown tall enough to have fallen over but still very green.  Furtling has revealed slightly less than naff all but I'm reluctant to pull the whole bag out if not ready! On harvest, do you cut the stems off and empty the bag out? Thanks for any pointers!

why would you empty out the bag when you can harvest as you need them, just stick your hand in and take what you need leave the rest to grow on, how fresh do you want your produce?

Well like my post said I can't actually find any! I would just take what I need if there were any..

Planted First Earlies under cloche 8th March, had uncovered them by the last lot of frosts but the forecast meant I got them covered again. Had a root of Rocket on 28th May that yielded 20 ozs. Left them for a bit then tried Vale's Emerald on 5th June and got a touch over 2 lbs - they were beautiful, ate them all that day shared with visitors. Went back to Rocket on 6th June and got 3 lbs 3 ozs, regretted buying the rubbish we ate earlier in the week. Intend to try Red Duke of York this weekend. Rocket still look like being the quickest but the Vale's Emerald certainly win on taste.

That's good DD, especially as I'm growing Lady Christl for the first time this year (would be even better if I understood all of it!)

(Like the footnote to the page.  )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
