Springer Spaniel vs Chicken Poo
« on: June 06, 2010, 00:13 »
My Vet and my dog trainer have differing opinions on whether I should be concerned about my springer eating a bit of chicken poo, the vet says its nothing to worry about and just worm her more often, the trainer thinks it might be toxic.  Which side of the fence do any of you come down on?  PS dog is very healthy, and the poo is not a staple food:P

I have a Springer too and he eats all sorts of poop (when he isn't rolling in it!).  He is also always very healthy, so I would take more notice of what your vet says.  My experience is that dog 'experts' often say stuff that they obviously believe but just isn't true.  When I got my Deerhound as a pup, I was given all sorts of dire warnings from the breeder (a woman of long experience) about how to exercise him and the threat to his joints of not heeding said dire warnings.  So, I spoke to my vet who in turn consulted an animal bone specialist.  The advice I got was 'walk his legs off if you want to' with the proviso that I might have to carry a tired pup the last bit of the route.  So I did and I still have a very healthy if somewhat grouchy Deerhound who will be 11 in November.  All the Deerhound people parrot this tosh about joints as I am sure do a lot of other breed 'specialists'.  I know who I am going to believe in the future.

It must be the breed - my springer loves poo too.  When I was cleaning the coup once she ate so much she vomited - I knew it was chicken poo from the smell.  I went to get tissue to clean it up and it was gone when I got back  :nowink: gross little animal!  My other dog is totally normal and wouldnt even eat budget dog food - far classier

I wouldnt worry, springers have guts of steel, ellie is never sick and she eats pooh, crayons (yes we find her rainbow studded poos around), rubber shoe soles, plastic heads off toys etc etc.  The breed is a gaming breed bred to catch foul.  Be happy its only the pooh shes scoffing and not the birds!
Avoid fruit and nuts.  You are what you eat.

I have 3 springers and yes, they all eat the poo. :D  They also find dead rabbits, birds etc and eat them too given half the chance :(  One of mine still sits outside the run watching the hens wondering what they would taste like :(
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.

Weve had a bat too from the cat!  It was still alive and we saved it.  Our two cats got the biggest rabbit ive seen through the cat flap - it must have been a joint effort and a squeeze - at least with cats you get the whole animal!  Ellie brings me birds legs with the thigh still attached and gross pieces!

Maybe someone should tell these animals wed prefere flowers, shoes or handbag related gifts instead.

Yep, my springer x collie also eats the chook poop while I'm cleaning out - think she sees it as trying to 'help'! She also has been witnessed to eat chicken pellets too but prefers the real thing! ::)

We used to get next doors chickens in our garden all the time   Eventually they fenced them in.

However, our old labrador was continually eating their poo and over a period of time became quite ill, we had him backwards and forwards to the vet who definitely told us that it can cause  dogs to become poorly.

Once the chickens were contained in their own garden our dog got better.

My two yorkshire terriers eat chicken poo, but obviously not too much because they are very healthy. Glad I'm not a dog  :tongue2:

My Westie enjoyed the poultry manure pellets that I put down on the lawn to deter the neighbours cats.  He is dead now but it wasn't the poultry manure that killed him.
