Gooseberry bushes have no fruit

Some of my bushes have no fruit (and they did last year).  I think this was because I let them get overgrown with weeds (now rescued). 

Any ideas on how to get fruit or is it too late for this year?

PS they were planted between 2007-2009 and some have fruited before.  I do have fruit on 3 bushes but not a lot because they are quite new.

What do you think bushes that fruited last year did not this year?

I have the same problem - I was given about 6 bushes and planted them about March, about half have fruit and the other half dont. When do you pick the fruit - it looks quite large but I have never grown goosberries before

I had the same problem for a couple of years, then my fence blew down, and I replaced it with a 'hit and miss' double picket type thing which allows the air/wind to penetrate instead of the solid panel which probably 'trapped' a pocket of cold air where the gooseberries live (at the bottom of a gentle shady slope on the west side of the house). Since then I've had annual bearing of fruit.

So is it possible that our long cold winter killed off the flowers, or failing that maybe they were eaten by birds (bullfinches etc)?
