Growing Tomatoes and Cucumbers Together
« on: May 31, 2010, 18:13 »
I've planted some cucumbers and tomatoes in the same bed today, and once I planted them, I realised I'd not done proper research and I wondered if I'd made a mistake.  Will they grow ok together?  If not, any help on what can I do (without having to dig them up!)?

Thanks

The problem is, Tomatoes like a humid atmosphere, Cucumbers prefer a dry atmosphere. You don`t say if they are in the greenhouse or outdoors and what varieties you are using. :D

I always have grown tomatoes and cucumbers in the same conditions in the greenhouse.

Outside they automatically get the same conditions, they've no choice

Is that not the other way round David? I was under the impression that cucumbers prefer humid conditions?
Either way I grow them together and try to keep a happy medium in the glass house

well they both get planted out in the fields in greece......hot and dry air for both of them with no problems, so I never could understand the need to mollycoddle them -apart from keeping them frostfree in the UK which has been a struggle this spring

Tomatoes are more likely to succumb to blight in humid conditions, cucumbers are more likely to suffer from red spider mite in dry conditions.

Take your pick or just ignore me (I'm going to get off the fence now as my bum is getting sore!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Ah right, a differing of opinions!  That's fair enough.  They are planted outside in the garden.  Don't know what the cucumber are, they were donated.  The tomatoes are Gardeners Delight, which I know should be grown in a greenhouse, but I don't have one, which is why I waited till this weekend.  They are being grown in a sheltered sunny spot though, so I have my fingers crossed that I will get both tomatoes and cucumbers.

Gardeners Delight should be fine outside, well as fine as any other tomato. I've never had a problem outside (in the UK as well as here in France).

My gardeners delight do really well outdoors, so wouldn't worry about that, although I am further South than yourself.  Its a greenhouse or outdoor tomato.  I have also grown cucks and toms together outdoors.
