Planting second earlies
« on: May 31, 2010, 14:42 »
Being a newbie to the art of growing my own vegetables I will be asking lots of question in the coming months.

I have aquired some second early potatoes that are allready chitting(hope that is the right term of phrase) Is it way too late to plant these or could I give them a try?

I don't want to take up room if they really are not going to grow into anything.

Many thanks
Ma x

Hi Ma Lowe, welcome and ask away as we all do, novice or not. Yes - chitting is when you see the new sprouts appearing at one end (called the rose end). I have never planted second earlies as late but, if you have any room to spare, give it a try. There's nothing lost and let us know if you were successful. They might not be a big size, but hopefully you should get something tasty for the pan...mmmmm!  :tongue2:
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I've only just finished planting my main crops, as I had nowhere to put them!! Providing we don't get blight they should be ok
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

2nd earlies take about 13/14 weeks from planting till harvest, which takes you to the very begining of september....so they will be fine...no problem ;)
