Broccoli stem too long (photo)
« on: May 31, 2010, 08:22 »
I was given four Broccoli plants, so I don't know how this came about, but one of the plants have an extended main stem. Hopefully a photo has been uploaded if i've done it right!

The one on the left is OK, compared tot he one on the right with the extended stem.

Is it worth panting this as space is limited.

Plant it up to the bottoms of the leaves burying the stem and it should be ok.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

The extended stem looks like it's actually the root. If the seed was sown a bit to close to the surface, the root could have pushed the seed up as it tried to grow down, so definitely plant all of the 'stem' below the leaves.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Depth of planting is not the problem. They should not be inside. Brassicas prefer cooler temps.

They've gone leggy through being too warm and not having enough light.

They may be beyond hope, but you can try replanting  up to the leaf, but you'll need a deep pot.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
