Look out for blackleg
« on: May 28, 2010, 10:56 »
A few of us on our site have got potato blackleg in our spuds.
Different varieties, planted at different times from different suppliers
Just a heads-up for all as it may be a bad year for it - too early to say yet but worth being on your guard.

Take a good look at this http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/profile.aspx?pid=223 or search on this site for blackleg so you know what you're looking for.

I've never had it before so it was a bit of a surprise.

Lift and burn infected plants.

One of my 'epicure' was looking a bit sickly....lo and behold, blackleg. I lifted the whole plant from the ground on a spade and as much of the surrounding soil as I could without disturbing its neighbours. I hope it was just the one. A few suffered from it last year but I'm sure it was later in the season.

I have one plant, Nicola that sounds like it has it. Noticed it looked a bit sickly last week but haven't done anything with it. I will go and dig it up this afternoon & get rid.  >:( Glad I read this one - thanks
