We have eight eggs under a broody bantam, day 19 today, Never done it before and have some questions.

We are leaving her alone at the moment, up till now she has been taken off every morning for food, drink and a poo.

She is sitting in a 16" cardbord box nest.

The house she is in has a solid base and pophole and is on  8" stilts. The roof lifts off for access. It is only about a metre square. She is lifted out in the morning and she hops back up into the house after her morning break. Her food and drink is in a small wire pen outside the pophole on grass.

Questions.

Should we move her food and drink into the house, or will she jump out if she needs to?

We've been told to remove any eggs that are starting to crack and to pop them back under her at the edge of the nest when she gets back on. What do you think?

When/if the chicks hatch we will just put crumb and shallow pebbled water beside the nest, presumably she will direct them to it.?

Do they continue to use the cardboard nest, and for how long.?

I'm worried they might fall out the pophole, if we erect a ramp, if mum takes them for a walk will they manage the ramp, and if not are they ok just on the wooden base of the house or do they need grass?

Are there any other good tips you can give a first timer?

Thanks for any info you can impart.

Is there anything esle we have to do now or should we just let her get on with it.?
Liv.

ok still lift her out until they start to hatch then leave the eggs alone. Do not move them whilst they are pipping. For the first coupls of sdays the first hatched will be ok without food and water and then when mum is sure that no more will hatch she will bring them out to feed and drink. Make your ramp as shallow as possible. When mum has bought them out I always change the bedding and remove any eggs left. She will still use the box as their home until she decides she wants to leave them - usually around 5 - 8 weeks of age. Really that nest box is a bit small so you may have to remove it and replace with a bigger on in a week or so.
Staffies are softer than you think.
