Egg eating
« on: June 15, 2007, 14:59 »
Well after the amazing "two eggs in one day" triumph from Clary last Friday I've been waiting for the "reality check"!

She came out of the nest box just after laying with her egg in her beak

The shell looked almost papery and both chooks devoured egg and it's contents before my very eyes

There was a bit of yolk in the nest box so I assume she realised it was a dud and decided to dispose of it.

I feed them on layers pellets and they also get mixed grit. I hadn't provided oyster shell as their eggs had been fine until now.

 Any ideas.....

Oyster and a little bit of cod liver oil, and fingers crossed its just an egg laying blip.  If the shells harden up they will stop eating them.  Good luck  :D

PS. Stop any treats and makes sure they are eating their layers !

Mine occasionally chuck out a softee which is sometimes devoured, but they never bother with the hard ones.

I mix my oyster in with the pellets, sometimes I spray them with a little olive oil and then add the oyster in hopes that it will stick to the pellets

Don't forget a splash of Cod liver oil to provide the vit D to aid calcium absorption.  Once a week as Richy does would be fine  :D
