In case you decide to change the variety, "winter little gem" hearts up well, as does the ermm! not winter "little gem", they are cos lettuce but similar to Romaine.   Thompson and Morgan Chartwell always hearts well for me as well.

I have had romaine lettuce that has not hearted well, one particular variety, I'll look up the name tommorrow if I still have the packet.

PS mine have been growing since end of March, and not hearted yet, I really wouldn't expect mine to do so yet at this time of year.  In other words I have the feeling they are a bit slower at this time of year and with the rotten weather.

I've grown them before and they have hearted up ok. They do take a while to heart though, longer than the butterheads or the small ones like Little gem.

You can tie them up with raffia or soft twine if the leaves are flopping over instead of folding round each other :)

Thanks to everyone for their replies.
I intend to pick a couple over the weekend to have with some steak and jacket spuds, can't wait and then will leave the rest to form hearts.

I never wait for my romaine to heart up. I just keep picking the outer leaves so the inner ones stay nicer and the outers don't become too ugly to use. I seem to get a longer run of growth this way.

a great crispy lettuce. I usually have to many and find they don't really heart up more like a cos. They also come again if you cut and leave stem. usually 4 litle lettuce off one stem
