lettuce
« on: October 27, 2010, 23:21 »
I am having such good results with all my leaf veg. :D
I have wonderful strong hearting lettuces, rampant Swiss chard and perpetual spinach and healthy pak choi.
They all got touched by the recent frosts but seem to love a bit of cold. Try growing leaves in Summer and they're weak and just pest magnets!
And the Winter lettuce is coming along really quickly too!!

That sounds brilliant, I hope you haven't jinxed yourself though!

I didn't get round to planting lettuce in pots last week, you think I've left it too late?  They'll be kept on the balcony.

No harm in trying hardy lettuce. Seed is pretty cheap!
I planted mine back in September and the Winter Density are about 3" high but the others are much smaller.
Give it a go....

Thanks, I'll try to get it done before work tomorrow, if I get up in time.

What variety of pak choi did you grow?  I tried some Green Boy and Santoh this year and they both grew REALLY well.  I've tried them both and I like the green boy much more as it had a wonderful taste all of it's own where as the santoh was a little bland in comparison.

Green Revolution and Ruby Shine...both planted back at the beginning of June. I've just used them for baby leaves up to now. Growth has doubled recently and I'm hoping they'll go through the winter like last year.
My garden is pretty sheltered.....

I might try the Ruby Shine as that looks quite a pretty colour for pak choi.  Mine were planted at the very end of July but I haven't had big heads like I see in the pictures although they're still a decent size and useable.

I have tried growing pak choi 3 times in the past and they all bolted very quickly when I planted them out from the greenhouse on each occasion.

Is there a particular variety that is bolt-resistant?
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

I think planting later prevents bolting. They don't mind the cold weather.

It's not that warm here in Shetland.
Are you suggesting that I should sow some now?

i  am trying to grow Chinese cabbage not having any success with orientals pak choi seems to be a favorite  i start the seed off in the same way as i grow my brassicas in seed trays and then pot them on but it always seems to bolt before planting i must be doing something wrong as the same happened to the spinnage i set  :(

is it best sown in rows and thinned out is it the same for Swiss chard and spinnage  ???

i looked at a variety called Wong Bok for next year I'm tempted any advice :)

I planted mine straight out at the very end of July which was a little later than I might have but that's when I got my plot.  I planted a couple of seeds every couple of inches (if I remember rightly) and then just left them covered with a net.  They grew pretty well considering they were under constant attack from slugs.
