should i be pinching out?
« on: May 18, 2010, 21:21 »
I'm a veg grower and this year i am trying to grow more in the way of flowers.

I have the following at seedling stage, which, if any would benefit from pinching out?

Nigella
Cosmos
Night scented stock
poppies
pansies
snapdragons

Thanks in advance.
Liv.

I`d be inclined to let them do what they are supposed to do. :D

I'd definitely do stocks and snapdragons when they've got 2/3 pairs of leaves, the others I've always left alone. Jude.

The only one I would feel confident to pinch out would be snapdragons, at about three leaf height.  :)

Definitely snapdragons, pansies, nsstock.  I have pinched out cosmos but found it made it flower to late.  It made huge bushy plants but didn't come into flower before summer was over.  I've never pinched out poppies or nigella :)

I was also going to ask this question Livvy - whether it is the general rule to pinch out the leading shoot if you want a bushy plant and whether there any notable exceptions?  I have found it is a good idea to pinch out fuchsias for example - I wanted to take some cuttings anyway.

I have also pinched out some of my cosmos and some petunias which were getting a bit leggy, so I will see what happens.

Now I've got some rooted bush chrysanthemum cuttings which I am going to pot up and I am wondering whether to pinch out the growing point on these as well?
