How to harvest pears from a tall pear tree?

I dont do fruit but the mother in law had a dog that kept eating all the fruit that fell of her trees and making itself sick - so she hung up some netting from the lower branches which caught it and stopped it landing where the dog could get to it. She also discovered that this seemed a pretty good way to collect it as it was rarely damaged by the fall and each morning she just lifted it out of the net!
