Why Have All The Pears Fallen Off My Young Tree?
« on: June 08, 2009, 01:09 »
Hello to all, my first post. Please be gentle.

I recently moved into a house with a young pear tree (approx. 6 or 7 feet tall) in the garden. The tree had plenty of flowers, which soon turned into a very promising crop for a small tree.

One day there were loads of small pears growing, then a few days later hardly any. When I touchd one of the small pears, it just broke off very easily. They snapped off where the stalk that comes out of the pear joins the branch. None left at all now. :( What's gone wrong?

Still at least the apple tree which is about the same age still has all the apples attached - for now!

It is called 'the June drop'.  At this time of year fruit trees shed fruitlets that have not been fully pollinated, or which the tree cannot support to maturity.  Usually only a proportion of the fruitlets drop, but possibly because it is still too young your pear tree has dropped the lot.

Hopefully in future years it will hold onto its crop.

pears need quite specific pollinators, one type of pear needs  another particular type of pear to pollinate it so if there isn't one around in the local neighbour that could be the reason

They can go into biennial fruiting mode. In the years the do fruit, picking off most of the fruit reduces the strain on the tree and may allow fruiting every year.

Pears are not easy.  One of our trees failed to crop for ten years after it was planted.  We only kept it because it was so beautiful in flower.  Now it crops regularly.

Cheers,

When we moved to our house there was apear tree that was very poorly, don't know what was wrong with it but the leaves dropped off and it started to die so we just chopped it down. It has now regrown and last year had a dozen pears on it, don't know how it will fair but it has never looked so healthy  :D

When they say picking off they me before they mature... leaving only a suitable number for the crop....
