broody bantam - help!
« on: May 07, 2010, 19:22 »
Hi,
I have a broody bantam and don't know what to do. We don't have a cockerel so the eggs aren't fertile and we want the eggs anyway.
Shes very stropy if we go near her.
I am getting different points of view on how to treat it and get her out of this mood. One of my friends says just to leave her, another says to pick her up and put her in the run and she will 'calm down'.
What should we do?
Shes not eating much either which is worrying.
Help.

broody hens don't eat much. Every morning lift her out of the coup and place her in a mesh box - something like a dog cage with just layers and water. do not put a nest box or anything that can be used as a nest box in with her. Some people leave theirs in that over night but I put mine back in the coup just in case anything comes along and could scare her. Next day repeat and so on until she is out of the habit.
Staffies are softer than you think.

She could stay broody for several weeks, so long as you keep taking her out to get some food, she will eventually come out of it. It's annoying because they don't lay while they're broody and for a while afterwards.

I agree. Make sure you keep taking her out, she will hopefully give up being broody after a while if you keep doing this.
