aarrhhg compost problem .. help please
« on: April 27, 2010, 10:01 »
I took some compost from my home dalek bin and spread it around the veggie patch. I am now seeing grass sprouting all over the plot, it seems to be sprouting from clumps of grass that are not fully decomposed.. grrrrrrrr

So should I scrape all the top off the plot (thankfully not much planted yet, but it will be a pain) and re compost? or will hoeing keep killing it eventually?
should I move the bin, it is in the shade ATM. or will this always happen?

Should I buy garotta activator more often or should I just get the kids to wee in there more often?

I wouldn't have put clumps of grass in the compost in the first place :(

Grass from when you have cut the lawn are ok, but anything else is likely to regrow.

Hoeing should kill it off if it is ordinary grass, but if anything looks to begrowing strong and clumpy then dig it out as it may be couch grass.

Just keep hoeing. It will be fine. Get some comfrey if you can, that sets your compost heap off a treat.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

It is clumps of grass cuttings, from the mower which have clumped together in the bin.

I have hoed it and raked the bits that I can out and I will keep hoeing, just going to get more tricky as I wanted to sow some seeds this week and hoeing regularly will dement that.. hey ho!!! I live and learn!

clumps of cut grass wouldn't in themselves regrow, unless the grass was cut very long with seed heads ..it's all very strange

Unless the grass cuttings have provided perfect conditions for grass seed, already existing in the soil,  to germinate :(

Hoe hoe and hoe again....my battle is with ground elder, so I sympathise
