Hens on top of hutch
« on: April 18, 2010, 12:28 »
My hens have decided that they like it on top of their hutch - my problem with them sitting up there is that they are then a short hop away from the field at the bottom of the garden which I would have difficulty getting into to retrieve them.
Are they likely to fly into the field - the breeder told me they would stay put.
Has anyone got any advice on stopping them getting up there? It is only about a metre high. I tried putting large plastic plant pots on top but it didn't stop them.

They are likely to use the top of the coop as a launch pad - and the grass is always greener on the other side!
Can you either move the coop further away from the field boundary or put a higher boundary along the fence line?  They are more likely to fly across and down than up!

mine go into the field next to us especially when the farmer sowed his winter barley seeds - we had all my girls and the local pheasants working in a line eating it all up
To stop them either move the coup as suggested by treaclminer or could you not cover the run over on that part?
Staffies are softer than you think.

perhaps nail some mesh to overhang over the top of the hutch?
It's like America...But south!

if you are to clip the hens wings remember to only do one and not both, then after they moult clip the other side. This will keep their muscles even and clipping just one wing is supposed to off balance them when they try to fly but when I did my first hens they still used to find a launch pad and fly off that so this may not be the answer  ;)

thanks for all the advice...
It wouldn't be practicable for me to move the hutch. Instead I've clipped one of their wings each. They haven't been up there since but it could be coincidence. If this fails, I'll have to find a way of blocking them.
