sand any good ?

If you have good loam soil then you can use either. If your soil is more clay, then avoid the soft sand as it turns clay into concrete. Sharp sand is superior for drainage in clay, and in loam. Root crops do well in looser soil - carrots, parsnips, potatoes, but any crop would benefit from good drainage except celery which prefers it a bit boggier.
