Who's eaten my cabbage/carrots/fennel
« on: June 06, 2007, 15:44 »
Hi, I'm new to the site but have been growing veg for about 4 years now. I've just moved to a new house in Kent so am new to the possible pests in the area.

Having had a glorious planting spring season, everything looked rosy, until I went away this weekend and noticed all my cavalo nero had been 'capped' basically stripped of all leaves. After further inspection, this pest had also taken my carrot tops, some fennel tops and my purple sprouting broccoli.

I looked for other posts on this topic, most of which blame pigeons or slugs, so yesterday I planted up my 'spare' plants and sprinkled slug pellets and covered everything in netting. This morning to my dismay, the leaves have all completely gone again! What could it be as the patch looks clean/ not entry marks or bird droppings or slug trails. I'm perplexed.

It could be mice - they don't need much of a gap to get under netting.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm going to add a slug trap tonight to see whether there is a monster in the area. I'm not convinced it is yet as the leaves have been taken clean off, not nibbled like slugs usually do.

From experience, I thought only rabbits would eat all of those. Have you used small enough (25mm) mesh, as there's a lot of little ones around that will will go through the next size up?

I have had exactly the same problem - slug pellets down and everything netted and still its being eaten - no sign of dead slugs or snails. Ive replanted 3 times now but everytime within a few days its all eaten
A slug is for life not just for the allotment

The only pest I know that eats fennel is rabbits, and they will also eat cabbage and carrot top.

Are you fencing adequately?
