rotovator coil?
« on: April 11, 2010, 17:44 »
Iwas given an old rotovator last year by a forum member which had been working. ive spent a couple of hours trying to get it going today, with no success.I ve fixed the throttle linkage, put a new spark plug in but theres still no spark.Does this mean that it needs a new coil?Ifso  does anyone know how much its likely to be  or where to get one?
As far as i can see its a merry tiller with a 5 hp B&S engine.
  Cheers.

If its pre electronic ignition it has points under a cover which will need cleaning but the starter clutch will have to be removed to take the flywheel off to get at them. There are some other posts on this subject from earlier this year.

well ive had someone take a look at it for me and their opinion was" No wonder they gave it to you for nothing. they dont have to go to the trouble of dumping it now"They tried new points in it,a new lead and still it wont start. It  looks like it needs  a new coil (about £40) &the magneto(?) is well on its way out. >:(
I'll be listening out for the scrap man.

Did spark at all if so did they check the flywheel key was in perfect condition with no indentations in it?..could you post a photo of what your repair person describe as a magneto thats well on its way out  don't give up on it yet

If its a merry tiller and all else fails  and the rest of the machine is ok,no oil leaks on the rotor shaft and good tines, then Iwould  look out for an a replacement engine rather than buy a chineese  cheapo..try freecycly or auction site for an engine with a 3/4 "Q"shaft
