loadsa mildew on my onions and shallots, so i dug up the onions to dry out, and will do the same with shallots next week.
blooming garlic rust tho' its turned the soil orange underneath. never seen it so bad.
everyone at our allotment has had the onions bolt as well, this year.
our toms aint doing so good either, come to think of it, the blasted potatos arn't as good as last year.
makes you wonder why you bother.
if i could only grow rotavators instead of 'taters i would do quite well.
looking on the bright side, ive eaten more broad beans than the pigeons this year :D

planted read and white onions and they are coming along really well.

tried spring onions on seed tape but nothing has come through - perhaps the wet weather again

I "think" my onions are doing okay at the moment, but could someone please explain what a bolted onion looks like.

I probably need a piccie :)

It will have a thick stem coming from the centre of the bulb, which will ultimately be taller than the rest of the plant. The top will bear a flower, lookibng like this....

This should be removed & the bolted onions used first.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My onions look great (I think!) they look very thick like leeks, lots of lovely green growth but no notable 'bulb' at the base. I grew onions last year and can't remember when they started bulbing up.. I can't even remember when  ia ma supposed to harvest them.. much later I think. August/??

Many thanks

They should start to 'bulb' soon & rain is forecast this week, which should help, (if it comes).

Don't worry about what time they are going to be ready, the onions will tell you when they've had enough, the stems will keel over.

DD has posted a "Life On Earth quality" picture above.  Note that this is a near-open flower head & that you should be nipping out the stalk well before this stage.  Remove as soon as you can differentiate the stalk which bears a bud.
