Gooseberry bush roots
« on: March 28, 2010, 21:15 »
I inherited some Gooseberry bushes on my new plot, 2 of which I passed on to another plot holder.

Whilst digging over the patch where they once were I have come across a number of roots that I would say are still living.

Can I use them to grow new plants? Or will that never work
Please be patient! Learner gardener - allow plenty of room when passing!

If you want some more, just see if anything grows from the roots, you may be lucky. I wouldn't try moving them, just wait a while :)

I can't help wondering why you gave the others away though if you want more now   :D

Sounds odd really when you put it that way.

I don't need anymore but I'd hate to get rid of them if they are good for making new bushes.
Theres always someone to pass things onto.

Gooseberries layer very easily - sometimes too easily, so if you want more bushes peg a branch of your remaining bushes to the ground.  If you don't want any more prune off any branches lying on the soil

Do other fruit bushes layer at all?
I've also got red currant, blackberry, blueberry, white currant & black currant would it be worth trying with any of them?

They will root at the leaf node, so make sure this area is in contact with the soil. :D
