[Half a plot man]

Can anyone recomend where to get 8ft bean canes from please? I have had no joy on freecycle thus far!

How much are they?   

Hazel twigs are wonderful but not all over the place if you live in a town.... I've used them for peas in the past.... long past - before the housing estates replaced the hazel coppice

You haven't got to use canes. String or wire will do or even netting.

I'll be surprised if you get them on Frecycle-they are not the sort of thing I would give away.

Buying in small quantities usually is more expensive.

I got 50 8' canes from a Scottish surplier on eBay for about £35 with free delivery. If that's too many you can cut them down for other purposes eg Tomatoes or support netting.

I got a lot of my kit, seeds and accessories from (believe it or not)  Wilcos.

Our towns store has a massive gardening section and in all honestly a lot cheaper than the garden centre in my area.

Cannot remember the exact price, but I got my canes, twine and massive container from Wilcos and was very happy with the price.

yes i got a pack of 5 caines for £1.50 at wilkos i dont think you will find them any cheaper than that

I've been waiting all winter to build one since I saw it on here, finished it today.
   It's the first one ever seen on my allotments, caused quite a stir it did

Ask your friendly, neighbourhood carpet seller/fitter.  A lot of roll carpets are delivered rolled around a bamboo cane - albeit rather thicker* than the usual bean canes - which may be anything up to 3 or 4 metres long!  I have a few I obtained in this manner although as I have loads of the thinner ones amassed over the years I tend to use the thick 'Cleopatra' ones in rather more structural-support roles such as framework over which to drape netting.  

Obviously your chances are better the busier the carpet supply operation from a sales standpoint and it helps if the carpet fitters etc are not themselve vegetable gardeners!  Where you get lucky, they tend to be given away as taking reduces the amount of stuff they have to take to the tip etc

(*the 'thicker' referred to above is typically 1" - 1.5" diameter)
