what are your favourite potatoes to grow ,to cook, to taste ? I'm trying Pentland Javelin as my first early of which i did'nt try last year (my first year on my new plot) Tried premiere but was very dissapointed.My second early is Maris Peer and my main crop is Desiree which i grew last year and was very impressed ,all round performer .

Agree with people on the link re Kestrel, I had a massive crop, BUT skins were scabby, so not doing them again.  Main was maris piper which were ok...a bit uninteresting.

I'm trying 5 different kinds this year, which I bought at a Potato day in Kelso, which was brilliant as you can pick our own and pay per spud, and they have all the info and advice you need.

that's a shame alison  ... what was growing in the bed before you planted the Kestrel?  Is it possible you had limed the soil last year for brassicas - lime can cause scab on otherwise healthy certified seed potatoes.  I can't say I've ever had problems with Kestrel before and is one of my all time favourite spuds  :D

ahhhh thats perfectly possible.  I had moved house so no idea what was in the bed the previous season. 
OK, might give Kestrel another try then, thanks for info paintedlady.

i have pentland javelin first early. kestrel second.desiree for main . the name of my house is the kestrels ive also got home guard in the greenhouse which ive graown for  years they are very tasty but you cant allways get the seed.
