very large egg
« on: March 18, 2010, 20:55 »
One of my girls laid the biggest egg I've ever seen today(have to show off, don't get much to show off about hehe!)anyway,it is about the size of my palm and I will try to photograph it.But my worry is that my neighbour said she had one like that once ,then her hen died! so now I'm really worried!any thoughts?is a very large egg abnormal?

When you think about where an egg comes from, then it would be obvious that laying too mant large eggs cannot be good for them.It can cause tear's, problems internally or even cause the hen to become egg bound. You will find lot of posts from people celebrating large eggs, but it should be more of a worry than a celebration(from the hens point of view) however, idid have a hen lay 104g egg and she was fine :)

Hi lizzie,

WHAT?!?!?!  104g, that's mad.  Our largest one ever was a few weeks ago and it weighed bout 75 maybe 80, from a warren who's only 4 1/2 months, but on average they are between 45- 55g.  I take it that is about normal for any hen unless u have rather large fowl?

What is the average size/weight for a medium egg and a large egg?  I have been weighing mine recently to see what weight they are and they range from 50g to 60g.  The average from 3 of my hens is 54-56g but the Cuckoo marans are 60g.  I read in a poultry  magazine that when hens first start laying the pullets eggs are smallish and as they mature they lay larger eggs.  At what age are they considered to have matured?  Mine are about 33/34 weeks now but only started laying just under 4 weeks ago( the Cuckoo Maran only started laying on Monday this week).
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.

Good to know they are about average for their age :)

When they started they were really quite small and I thought they should be a little bigger...now I know they will get there when they are ready :)

nope its not normal for an ex-batt, in fact its more worring thay its an ex batt as they are more prone to problems due to the awful neglect they have already suffered, keep your eye on her. She will be more at risk from a prolapse or becoming egg bound :(
