OOPS! made a mistake
« on: March 18, 2010, 11:56 »
last week planted my spuds with lot of intrusion from my son (aha... blame him!!) but made a mistake of putting FEs feet apart in rows whereas i just read it should be two feet apart. should i dig the middle row and plant them two feet beyond?
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

should be 1ft apart in the row, but 2 ft between the rows to allow for earthing up.

If they are wrong, I'm with peter, leave them be.....1st earlies don't stay in long any way, but you'll have to find a way to earth them up without disturbing the other rows.

You'll remember next time won't you  That's how we learn :)

I would dig the middle row out and replant. They will have made no roots yet so it will do them no harm.

The thing that would worry me is how to keep the frost off them, particularly as they are First Early and will be through the ground soon.

That close together it will be very difficult to earth them up, which is how we normally keep the frost off.  Fleece would do perhaps, but earth is better - certainly in the early stages before the plants get too big to be able to earth up!

i dig a trench with the ridger, then dig a hole in the bottom of each trench with a trowel for the seed , then fill in and then earth up.

I always work on the theory that will keep the frost off................

nipped out for lunch and repositioned the middle row. Might fleece them tonight. The potatoes were very happy though being there for 4 days.

My old Grandad always said "Plant your potatoes on Good Friday" - why? I don't know.   But I do it anyway.   And yes I know it's a moveable feast but it works. :D

St Patricks day was the day to plant spuds, being the first public holiday after Christmas, and that was a few days ago   :D

My granddad always planted his spuds on Good Friday.  He worked in the mines and that was the first / only day at the right time of year which was a holiday and which wasn't a sabbath day.  (St Patrick's day being an irrelevance to N Wales iron miners  :) )
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
