Sprouts with hollow stems
« on: March 09, 2010, 08:41 »
My brussels sprouts were very poor this past season and when I dug out the roots yesterday they all had hollow stems. I have never seen this before, does anyone know what it could be?
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

To be honest I don't think I'd be suprised if the stems were hollow.

They're normally very pithy in the centre at the best of times. So would suspect that's fairly normal.

I know the stems on some kale I pulled out several weeks ago were certainly not solid in the centre as I recall how they collapsed when I was smashing them with a hammer prior to putting them on the compost heap.

The stems had a round hole running through the entire stem, just like a drill hole. I can't imagine what would have caused a perfect cavety like that.

Thanks for the re-asurance. I was keeping my fingers crossed that it was'nt  some awful disease, especially as the crop was not so good. But there is always hope for the next season. :)

Googled it.

Can be a Boron/Nitrogen imbalance, calcium may be implicated in the process as well.

Can also be caused by rapid plant growth.
