Help with storing Chitting Potatoes
« on: February 26, 2010, 07:41 »
Hello

Need some advice as regards the storage of chitting potatoes

As you know some of my plot is under about 12 inches of water at the moment. The beds which have been earmarked for the potatoes suffering the worst !

I brought my potatoes about 3 weeks ago hoping to get them planted this week. Wasn't expecting the weather to be this bad as this and my plans have now been delayed by a month.

Question is my pototoes have started chitting. How long can they stay like that without planting and what's the best way to store them now ?

Thanks

Tony

Somewhere unheated with plenty of light, you are looking for short sturdy green shoots. Hopefully the weather will improve soon, otherwise we'll all be in trouble.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Yes, cool, light & don't panic.

I found these leftovers in my shed last July. They grew well until blight got them.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Those aren't over-chitted ....

... these are! Put on the windowsill, above the radiator, last July read for August planting an Christmas harvest ... they are still on the windowsill :( In fact, as you can probably see, they are nearly ready for harvest!!

Right my spuds are doing well in the little plastic greenhouse. The white roots are now turning purple in colour but I'm still about 2 weeks from planting as my plot is still very wet and am unable to prepare the bed.

Will they last another two weeks and what should I do to help preserve them ?

Thanks

Tony
