My other two varieties I couldn't remember are Chesnor and Solent.

The garlic from my friend was grown from garden centre packet 'seed', but he can't remember the variety. He had success with it, I have grown it before and got some small bulbs but nothing substantial. Last year mine just didn't seem to get going. The bulbs from Wight Garlic are huge in comparison to those for sale in garden centres. My wife bought them for me at the Garlic Festival last summer.

Autumn sowings are supposed to give better results but there are varieties that can be planted in the Spring e.g. Picardy Wight and Wight Christo. Not too late yet.

Hi Cliff - Not too late if you put them in pots and then plant out in about 4-6 weeks. (That's what the main man in the home page video said) I think it's under 'Garlic - growing your own') Good luck.

Hi Rhysdad -  good question ! they are meant to be planted with the growing tip just below surface. Are they too deep ? Can they be replanted ? Anybody know ?

I think you may be confusing garlic with onions sets. Galric is indeed planted below the surface. Mine goes 3" deep aslo.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm nowhere near an expert on garlic, so have taken advice from the home page video diary.
I think the original question was 'is it too late to plant garlic ?' .
I know garlic should ideally be planted in the autumn (perhaps 3 inches deep !?!), but the 'main man' in the video suggests them being planted in pots, with the growing tip just below the surface.

... and the main-man has got them in his greenhouse, not out in the freezing cold which I understood made  the bulbs "clove-up".

But mine are at-least-as-late too this year, and I'm doing the same thing ... just wondering if I could stick them outside for (hopefully!) the last bit of cold weather?
